Spruce Structural Solid Wood (KVH)

Structural solid wood – or KVH for short – is solid softwood prepared for load-bearing and structural components in timber construction. In cross-section, each beam consists of a single piece of wood. To make long lengths possible, shorter sections are joined at the ends using a scarf joint.

Our NSI Spruce KVH is kiln-dried, planed on all sides, and has slightly chamfered edges. You can find it in cross-sections from 40 × 60 mm to 120 × 240 mm – from slender timber for subframes to sturdy beams for rafters, posts, or beam layers.

Properties of NSI Spruce KVH

  • Kiln-dried
The wood is kiln-dried (KD) and has a moisture content of approx. 15% (± 2%). This reduces later deformation; however, shrinkage cracks are typical for solid wood.
  • Planed on all sides
The beams are planed on all sides and have slightly chamfered edges – pleasant to work with and clean in appearance.
  • Scarfed and lightly glued
The scarf joint connects shorter sections into long lengths. The glue used for the scarf joint is light-colored and weather-resistant.
  • Manufactured according to standards
Our KVH is manufactured according to DIN EN 15497 / DIN EN 14080.
  • NSI quality
NSI stands for non-visible areas – for example, behind cladding, in roof structures, or in timber frame construction. NSI wood can be used in visible applications if small branches, resin pockets, or discolorations fit the desired appearance.

Select KVH by cross-section

The smaller cross-sections up to 80 × 100 mm are available in 5.0 m lengths. The larger cross-sections are cut from a 13.0 m long parent beam – you can select the cut lengths directly via the product variant.

Typical Applications

KVH is the standard choice for rafters, posts, purlins, frames, and beam layers in common timber cross-sections. For posts and supports for carports, pergolas, or terrace roofs, square timber such as KVH 120 × 120 mm is often used, while KVH 60 × 160 mm is used for rafters and frames.

In roof trusses, cross-sections such as 80 × 200 mm or 100 × 200 mm are typical when insulation is placed between the rafters. Concealed beam layers in timber beam ceilings are often built from larger cross-sections such as 120 × 240 mm, while subframes in interior construction are made from smaller cross-sections such as 60 × 120 mm.

Tip: For purlins, ridge beams, underbeams, or main beams with larger spans – and for beams that need to act uniformly – glulam (BSH) is often the right addition. In many projects such as carports or roof trusses, KVH and BSH are combined.

KVH Beam Cut Lengths

For the cross-sections from the 13.0 m long parent beam, you select the cut length directly via the product variant. This makes it easy to order and transport even long beams.

Important: We cut the beams manually with a chainsaw. The width of the cut results in material loss at every cut – therefore, the cut pieces are not millimeter-exact finished dimensions. Allow sufficient extra length for final trimming on site.

Professional Planning Advice

For load-bearing components, the required cross-section depends on the span, center-to-center spacing, roof structure, and snow load. For structures requiring building permits or larger constructions, the dimensions should be determined by a structural engineer or carpentry company.

Spruce KVH is not intended for direct, permanent exposure to the elements or for ground contact. In outdoor applications, structural timber protection is paramount: roof overhangs, post supports with a gap to the ground, water drainage, and ventilated connections. The weather-resistant glue refers to the scarf joint, not the wood surface. For connections in outdoor applications, corrosion-resistant stainless steel timber construction screws are suitable; load-bearing connections are executed according to structural specifications.
